Tis a strange business this blogging lark. Firstly, I suppose, because I’m never sure if anyone is reading it or if I’m just sending my musings into the crowded ether of the virtual world. Secondly, because it’s a surprisingly self-promoting thing for me to do.
Now, I know I’m no longer allowed to say that I’m shy, but I’ve certainly never been very good at standing up and presenting myself to the world. At work, perhaps it’s rather different, as I’m representing the company and not myself, but outside the context of work, introducing myself to a room of strangers holds a particular terror for me. Of course, once I have met people, I don’t seem to be able to shut up. Rather like Eddie Izzard once described himself as a lesbian in a man’s body, I think perhaps I’m a chatterbox stuck inside an introvert’s body.
I suppose therefore, the internet appeals to me. Here, I can introduce myself, but only to people who want to be introduced, and then I can witter away to my heart’s content. Someone asked me the other day if I was trying to build a “brand”, whether I was trying to make “Winekat” into and entity in its own right. I’m not really. I just like writing.
Which is why it was really nice to be asked to write some things recently for other people’s sites.
Firstly, I was asked to write for a friend’s food and drink site, called the Niche Food Collective. They specialise in writing about the more quirky and unusual aspects of food and drink, and asked me to write a piece on sherry (mostly, I think, because I seem to be drinking it all the time). What I wrote, can be found here: http://foodnichecollective.com/sherry-baby/
I was also very kindly asked to write a little something by the lovely Sally Prosser of mycustardpie.com. She was putting together a piece on women in wine, and I feel very honoured to be included. In hindsight, now that it’s been published, I should have written a little more, but I stand by my choices! The article is here and definitely worth a read, just for everyone else’s work too! http://mycustardpie.com/2013/01/21/women-wine-what-to-drink-2013/
So, there you, that’s two pieces of self-promotion right there! Beware, brand winekat is on the move… I jest.
Good evening.
